A special solution is injected directly into the affected veins, causing them to collapse and fade from view while blood is rerouted through healthier veins. It involves no surgery and little downtime.
Yes. Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), also called endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins caused by underlying venous reflux. A thin laser fibre is guided into the affected vein using ultrasound imaging, and laser energy closes the vein. It is generally performed with local anesthetic and can often be completed in approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
Sclerotherapy injects a solution into spider veins and small varicose veins so they collapse and fade. EVLT treats varicose veins caused by venous reflux by closing the affected vein from the inside with laser energy under ultrasound guidance. A consultation and ultrasound assessment are used to determine which treatment is appropriate for you.
EVLT at Calgary Vein & Laser is $3,300 per truncal vein, and your exact cost is confirmed in writing at your consultation. EVLT is generally not an insured service under Alberta Health Care when performed for varicose veins, so it is usually paid privately, and some extended health plans contribute. A referral is not required to book a vein consultation at Calgary Vein & Laser. If you already have a referral from your family physician or previous ultrasound reports, bring them along. For other services, please call the clinic at 403-252-4410 to confirm.
Sclerotherapy is generally well tolerated; some patients feel mild, brief discomfort during the injections. Mild redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site is common and typically subsides within a few days. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately, though heavy exercise should be avoided for a few days, and compression stockings may be recommended.
The number of sessions depends on the size and number of veins being treated. Many patients need multiple treatments for the best results, and veins continue to fade across sessions. Most patients notice improvement in the appearance of their veins within a few weeks.
