FAQs
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a safe and effective method for eliminating visible surface veins. Our highly skilled physicians or nurses perform a series of injections, introducing medication into the vein to sclerose it, eventually causing it to dissolve.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Sclerotherapy works by injecting small amounts of medication directly into the vein using a small needle. Several injections are given during each session. This treatment is effective for smaller varicose and spider veins, but multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.
How do I know if Sclerotherapy is right for me?
To determine if Sclerotherapy is right for you, we start with a thorough evaluation. During your first visit, you’ll complete a form detailing your medical history. Our nurse will then take your vital signs before bringing you to the examination-treatment area. The doctor will conduct a comprehensive examination of your issue and may initiate diagnostic investigations if necessary. You’ll be informed about the treatment needed to improve your condition.
Does Sclerotherapy hurt?
During Sclerotherapy, you may feel a slight sensation akin to a mosquito bite as the doctor or nurse injects a small amount of medication into your veins using a very fine needle.
How long does a Sclerotherapy procedure take?
A Sclerotherapy procedure typically takes only 15-30 minutes per visit.
Is Sclerotherapy covered by Alberta Health Services (AHS)?
Your office visit is covered by Alberta Health Services (AHS). In many cases, your private insurance company will cover all or part of the cost of the medications used during your treatment. Any portion not covered by AHS or your private insurance company can be claimed on your personal tax form.
Is Sclerotherapy permanent?
Sclerotherapy provides long-lasting results, but venous disease is chronic and progressive. Regular check-ups are necessary to ensure your veins remain healthy. Think of it like a yearly physical or dental examination for your legs.
Can I get Sclerotherapy anywhere else on my body?
Yes, Sclerotherapy can be performed in other areas of your body, including the hands.
